Cliff Caines

Director, Producer, Editor

Cliff Caines is an independent filmmaker from Northern Ontario, Canada; now based in Toronto. His films have screened internationally at festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, CPH:DOX, DOK.fest Munich, and RIDM - the Montreal International Documentary Festival. His first feature A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE received an Honourable Mention for the Colin Low Award for Canadian Documentary at the 2015 DOXA Documentary Film Festival. His second feature WORKHORSE won the 2021 Canadian Screen Award for Best Cinematography in a Feature Length Documentary. Caines holds a MFA in Studio Arts: Film Production from Concordia University, and an AOCAD in Integrated Media from the Ontario College of Art & Design. He is also an alumnus of the 2012 TIFF Talent Lab, the 2015 RIDM DCM Talent Lab, and the DOC Institute 2020 Breakthrough Program.

Ryan A. Randall

Director of Photography

Ryan A. Randall is an active cinematographer and educator based in Ontario. An associate member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, he has been shooting commercials, documentaries, short films, and media art projects for nearly 20 years. For his efforts on Workhorse (2020), Ryan won the 2021 Canadian Screen Award for Best Cinematography in a Feature Length Documentary, and was nominated for the 2020 Canadian Society of Cinematographer Awards: Robert Brooks Award for Documentary Long Format Cinematography.

Tom Third

Music Composer

Tom Third has garnered three nominations for the Gemini award, winning in both 2010 and 2014, and was the winner of the 2004 Volkswagen Score Competition sponsored by the Berlin Film Festival and juried by Walter Murch. Tom began work in dramatic episodic television with the Showtime series, Queer as Folk, and won the MPSE Golden Reel Award for music editing. Other notable assignments include the multi-award winning drama Durham County for HBO Canada, The Listener (Fox and CTV) and Shoot the Messenger (CBC 2016). Most recently, Tom composed music for the documentaries Cheer Up (2016), Yellow is Forbidden (2018), What Walla Wants (2018), and The Woman Who Loves Giraffes (2018)

Karen Hawes

Associate Producer

Karen Hawes is a writer, director, and producer with 20 years experience working on a diverse range of projects in a variety of capacities. She has contributed to a number of award winning productions. Her short documentary Good Knight - aka Batman (2014) screened at the Atlanta International Documentary Film Festival and won the Producers Award at the Lakeshorts International Short Film Festival.

Roland Schlimme

Supervising Editor

Roland Schlimme has been collaborating with leading independent filmmakers for the past twenty years. As an editor, he continues to focus on unscripted, non-fiction features. His formal sensibility and intuitive touch can be recognized in the works of Peter Mettler (Gambling, Gods, and LSD, The End of Time), Jennifer Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes, Long Time Running), and Phillip Barker (Night Vision, Malody, Shadow Nettes).

P. Jason MacNeill

Sound Editor, Sound Designer

P. Jason MacNeill is a Toronto-based Sound Editor and Sound Designer for Post Production, and a 24 year veteran of the industry. Jason’s work includes the critically acclaimed CBC tv series “Heartland”, Guillermo Del Toro’s “The Strain”, and the Emmy Award winning PBS kids show “Odd Squad”, including three Daytime Emmy Award nominations in the Sound Editing category. This will be Jason’s second film with Cliff Caines, having completed the Sound Edit and Sound Design for the 2015 documentary A Rock and a Hard Place.

Nathan “Jonna” Boulaine

Gimbal Operator

Nathan “Jonna” Boulaine is an emerging filmmaker based between Sault Ste. Marie and Ottawa, Ontario. Jonna has worked as a Camera Operator and Assistant Camera on a number of independent film productions, and he continues to work in a variety of positions in the film & television industry across Ontario. Jonna recently wrote and directed the short film Wendy and Peter (2017) which screened at the 2018 Northern Fantasy Film Showcase.

Sound Recordist

Jason Milligan is a two-time Gemini Nominated sound recordist (for The Take and Memory for Max, Claire, Ida, and Company) based in Toronto, Canada. Jason specializes in recording sound on location for documentaries, lifestyle, and reality programs and has worked with award winning filmmakers including Allan King, Avi Lewis & Naomi Klein, and Liz Marshall among others.

Daniel Froidevaux

Camera Operator

Daniel Froidevaux is a documentary filmmaker, and video artist whose work combines a discerning cinematographic eye with a tendency towards experimentation. His most recent film, The Quiet Zone (2017), co-directed with Elisa Gonzalez, premiered at Hot Docs 2017, and has since played Big Sky, Available Light, Victoria Film Festival, San Francisco Docs and the World Film Festival in Tartu, Estonia.
